Saturday Dec 09, 2017
Saturday Dec 09, 2017
This week, Jim and Dave talk to Mandy Rowden. Mandy is not only an incredible singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist; she also runs Girl Guitar. We talk about a lot of stuff, and she opened our eyes to many things. Our most sincere thanks to Mandy for giving us her time before her gig. You'll hear Jim's voice echo throughout. None of us heard it until it was being mixed, so we apologize. We hope you enjoy this interview as much as we did. We'll be presenting more women in music as time goes by.

Women in Music - Judy Rodman (part two of two)
Thursday Nov 16, 2017
Thursday Nov 16, 2017
We open this podcast with Judy's acceptance of the ACM (Academy of Country Music) New Female Vocalist award from 1986: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssIWx4CMmIs
We are honored to bring you this interview and we will work diligently to bring you more interviews like these. In this podcast, Judy explains why Johnny Cash wore his guitar in the studio even though it did not have strings. She talks about vocal techniques to preserve our voices as guitarist and to improve our ears, thus improving our playing. We talk about vocal health, studio vs road musicians, what it takes to be successful as a musician, and how to find joy when fame has come and gone. We even told her about Lemmy Kilmeister, to which she said, "Who?" A few laughs there.

Women in Music - Judy Rodman (part one of two)
Saturday Nov 11, 2017
Saturday Nov 11, 2017
This week, we present Judy Rodman. Judy was a forced to be reckoned with despite being on a microcosmic label and having poor management. She rised to the top of the country charts in the 80's with a string of Billboard top tens, a number one, and a number five written and presented to her by Bob Dylan. She tells us the story of that song, and we decided to book end the podcast with a snippet of that song rather than our normal theme music. Judy provided us with an hour of inside information into the business. She's been a backup and jingle singer, headliner, vocal coach, song writer, and producer of music since the 70's. In this episode, we hear about Pam Tillis, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and others. Next episode, we find out why Jonny Cash would sing in the studio with his guitar strapped on and no strings!! This conversation gives out listeners an in depth look at the good, the bad, and the fugly of the music business. We are particularly proud to begin a series we're calling "Women in Music". Sit back and relax, and maybe you'll listen to us while you're "going to work".

Dad Rock Unhipsters
Monday Nov 06, 2017
Monday Nov 06, 2017
Hi all and welcome to yet another episode of the Practical Guitarist. In this episode, we talk about the term "dad rock" and how we define it. We also came up with the term, "mom rock" to refer to women in rock who carried the torch for current rock and pop stars. As both of us are dads, it's certainly a term that hits home. I guess Jim would be 'grandad rock' as Dave is over 20 years younger and in his 30's! While there is some waxing poetic, we ask, "can the unhip sing hip music?", "does it matter how old you are when it comes to this term?", and of course, the most important question, "should I wear spandex?" (The answer is always a resounding NO! )
We hope you enjoy this episode. You can email us at practicalguitaristpodcast@gmail.com or contact us via our Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/133893213859290/

The Chinese Hypocrisy
Sunday Nov 05, 2017
Sunday Nov 05, 2017
Welcome back to two, yes two back to back special episodes. First, we bring you the Chinese Hypcorisy where podcaster Jared Dines had commisioned a guitar from Nicholas Olson and felt that he had been duped. We hope Dines would join us on the cast and let us know what his position is. We spoke with Olson, and though he has sinced moved out of the building community, we spoke directly to him and we provide a different perspective on things.
We welcome your input at our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/133893213859290/
Check out Jared Dines here: https://www.youtube.com/user/th3ycharg3 (mute your computer at work, because a very loud metal song will begin to play)

Dumbles, amp sims, and strings... Oh My!
Sunday Nov 05, 2017
Sunday Nov 05, 2017
This week we talk a bit about Dumble amps, and I'm sure I got a couple of time lines wrong. We also discuss the pros and cons of amp simulators. We've also introduced the string challenge where you, the listener get to tell us what strings are best. There will be a prize at the end, but this will last for months, so lets hope the prize is worth it. We're going to put 4 string manufacturers and brands to the test: Ernie Ball Super Slinky, D'Addario NYXL, Stringjoy (custom), and The Gabriel Tenorio String Company (custom). Over the next few months, we'll be putting up sound bites on the group Facebook page and challenging you to provide honest input. You won't know what string we're playing and we won't know the strings that the other host is playing. We are not allowing subjectivity to be involved, so the strings will be measured equally on their sound. While we may rate them in our views of feel, response, etc., those views will be on a scale; but you will be able to tell us how you feel about the tone. Good luck!
